Pregnancy Chiropractic at Progressive Chiropractic

Silly family photo

What kind of pregnancy do you envision for yourself?

Is your health more important at any time of your life than during pregnancy?

Or to put it differently, would you like to to be at your BEST during pregnancy?

I am a father of two and a husband who has supported his wife through two very difficult pregnancies. As a result I have seen first-hand how important it is for a mother to be healthy during this time. I’ve also witnessed how much of a struggle it can be when mom is NOT well!

I have helped expecting mothers towards a better pregnancy more times than I can possibly remember. I have also seen firsthand what a difference-maker chiropractic care can be in the journey towards a healthy delivery.

How does chiropractic help me have a better pregnancy?

Having provided chiropractic care for many pregnant mothers I have seen it benefit those with:

  • Neck pain
  • Sacroiliac joint (SI joint) and low back pain
  • Mid back and rib issues
  • Hip pain
  • Ankle and foot pain (especially later in pregnancy)
  • Sciatica
  • Pubic pain

These are the obvious and common ‘pain complaints’ that a pregnant mother might have but there are other less obvious benefits as well

Other benefits

Chiropractic helps maintain the skeletal and muscular balance of the spine and pelvis. This keeps the pregnant mother in the optimal position to both carry a child and give birth. As the shape of the body changes and adapts to gravity, chiropractic helps manage these forces and changes. In addition, a well-balanced pelvis creates a more optimal position for the developing baby in utero.

In short, chiropractic can help maintain and improve your quality of life throughout pregnancy.

How do I provide care as a pregnancy chiropractor?

I approach the care I provide to pregnant patients with the knowledge I’ve gained from being a student, practitioner, and husband to provide care that is safe, comfortable, and addresses both common and individual areas of issue effectively.

In other words, I provide care for my pregnant patients in the same way that I would for my own wonderful wife Melissa!

Our technology benefits pregnant patients

The WAY in which I work with pregnant patients is equally as important as WHAT I work on. I use what is called a ‘Hi-Lo’ drop table that automatically lowers the pregnant patient to horizontal. The ‘swing piece’ in the middle of the table also opens to accommodate a pregnant belly and allows a patient to lay on their stomach in comfort to receive treatment. The pregnant mother has the rare opportunity to lay flat and receive care while relieving pressure off of her backside (which I am told feels fantastic!)

Chiropractic adjustments are applied without more traditional ‘twisting’ or ‘torquing’ methods which keep the spine and pelvis balanced and restore full mobility to joints that require it. In addition, extremity joints such as hips, ankles, feet, shoulders, etc. are also addressed.

Our Variable frequency adjuster and electronic massage tables

When a more gentle adjustment is needed or when muscular work is required, I use the electronic ‘Variable Frequency Adjuster’ for treatment. This modern instrument applies a light tapping force on muscles and joints to restore mobility and decrease muscle tension. It can be thought of as a ‘fine tuning’ instrument for the spine and muscles. It’s also great for extremity joints and for working with those that might be nervous about receiving a chiropractic adjustment by hand.

After treatment our patients rest on our massage tables (or more technically the Intersegmental Traction Tables). This table has rollers that make their way up and down the spine in a wave-like motion and gently stretch ligaments and work more movement into the spinal joints while relaxing muscles. The expecting mother has the opportunity to allow her treatment to settle in while mentally relaxing as well. For many, this is the best part of their visit!

What else should I know?

Unlike other patients, I do not take xrays on pregnant patients and it may be more appropriate to do this following delivery depending on the individual. Post-delivery care can also be of great benefit as mom adjusts to the physical strain of labour and child care as well.

Each pregnant mother has different needs and as your pregnancy chiropractor I take pride in working with you to develop a plan to help keep you at your best throughout your journey that is tailored to your needs.
