It’s a story I see often in my practice and one that brings me a lot of joy to share.
A middle-aged patient, who spent long hours sitting at a desk every day, came to see me at his wife’s encouragement. He had never been to a chiropractor before and wasn’t quite sure what to expect.
Years of sedentary work had taken their toll: he was dealing with neck stiffness, pain, and fatigue that were beginning to interfere with his concentration and comfort.
Upon examination, we found evidence of mid-cervical arthritis, disc degeneration, and foraminal stenosis—conditions that can make the neck more sensitive to movement. That meant it was important to approach care carefully and strategically, avoiding forceful adjustments while still addressing the underlying causes of his discomfort.
In my experience, a lot of neck pain actually starts in the upper back. When that region becomes stiff and restricted, it places extra stress on the neck and shoulders. So instead of focusing solely on the cervical spine, we worked to restore healthy motion and balance throughout his upper back and supporting muscles.
How We Helped
We started with a combination of:
- Gentle drop-table adjustments to the thoracic spine to help restore movement and relieve pressure
- Instrument-assisted trigger point therapy to release tension in the upper back, trapezius, and rotator cuff muscles
- Light, non-forceful instrument work on the neck designed to improve motion and reduce irritation without strain
Alongside these visits, we built a simple routine of stretching and postural exercises that he could do at home and during work breaks to keep his spine mobile and resilient.
The Results
By his six-visit reassessment, the change was remarkable. His neck range of motion had greatly improved, his pain levels were vastly reduced, and most importantly, he had made stretching and posture work part of his daily life. He said he finally felt “in control” of his discomfort rather than at its mercy.
Today, we continue to see him periodically for maintenance care, helping him stay proactive about his spinal health and comfortable in his daily activities.
