When a patient came into our practice at 102 years old, experiencing debilitating low back pain and radiating leg discomfort (sciatica) that made it difficult for them to stay mobile and independent in their own apartment.
“Our patient arrived for their first visit lucid, alert, and full of life,” recalls Victoria chiropractor Dr. Mark Smith.
They had never tried chiropractic care before, and at their age, both the patient and the family were understandably cautious. But, they were also hopeful.
Tailoring Techniques to Support Mobility
After a thorough evaluation, we recommended a care plan suited to the patient’s mobility and preferences. Dr. Mark scheduled six weekly visits using a Hi-Lo drop table, which accommodated the patient’s limited range of motion. He performed gentle sacral adjustments and used light instrument-assisted techniques that focused on the lower back and hips.
“Every aspect of their care was adapted to the patient’s unique needs, ensuring safety, comfort, and dignity,” emphasizes Dr. Mark.
Meaningful Changes, One Visit at a Time
Over the following weeks, our patient shared that they felt steadier on their feet. The patient’s posture appeared more upright, and they began moving through their apartment again—sometimes with a cane, sometimes with a walker. While the patient’s health journey remained complex, chiropractic care became one supportive part of helping the patient stay active and engaged in daily life.
A Memorable Year of Support
Over the year that followed, our patient continued with maintenance visits on a less frequent schedule. While age-related changes gradually impacted overall health, the family expressed appreciation for the comfort and mobility they were able to maintain during that time.
“This patient remains the oldest patient I’ve ever had the privilege to treat,” says Dr. Mark. “This experience reminds me how meaningful care can be when it’s customized, respectful, and gently delivered.”
